What do Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, Ben Everton-Richards and Cheyenne Dunkley have all have got in common? Not much I hear you ask. Well you couldn’t be more wrong. The fact is they have all been called up to wear the three lions for England.
Rooney and Hart have been called up for Roy Hodgson and England’s World Cup 2014 qualifiers, while Everton-Richards and Dunkley will wear the three lions against Latvia under 23’s for Paul Fairclough’s England C team.
But what is the C team, I have never heard of it? So let me explain what it is all about. The C team was formed in 1979 and it is purpose is represents the semi-professional footballers and Non-league sections of the game.
For a player to be eligible for selection players have to be aged under 23 at the start of the season. However if the player turns 24 during the season then he is still allowed to play for the team for the rest of season because he was 23 at the start of the season.
So from this you can imagine with the restrictions in place there is a high turnover of players wearing the three shirt. A star man could be playing every game for England but signing for a football league team or just turning 24 means their England days are over.
But famous names who have worn the England C team shirt are Arsenal legend Alan Smith, Craig Mackail-Smith, Steve Morison and current Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale just showing that the C team is a very good springboard to play in the football league.
Currently the C team are managed by Paul Fairclough, ex Barnet manager, who took charge of the team in 2003. Fairclough took over from Steve Avory who had previously been in charge of the Three Lions C team for a year. One of the first managers was Howard Wilkinson, who went onto manage the England national team in a caretaker role.
Following the fixture against Latvia on September 10th. They play the Czech Republic on November 19th. A ground to be confirmed so if they play close to you then get down to support them.
